September 2014

What a great turnout for our first meeting. We didn’t have enough forethought to do a headcount, but we were all blown away by the turnout. Thank you to all who attended, and again, thanks so much to Evan and the crew at Barrier Brewing Co. for being such an awesome host and the great brewery tour!

We collected $285 from the 50/50 raffle, and thanks to the generosity of winner AJ D’Amico, all of the proceeds will go to bootstrapping the club’s finances!

We want to hear from you what you’re looking to get out of the club! Some items that came up last night were 1) holding competitions, 2) providing a feedback table at meetings, and 3) pouring at local beer festivals. We are working on all of those. I will be posting a list of upcoming competitions shortly that are open to all.

We are looking for help on getting a website designed, launched and hosted. And we need people with graphic design skills to help with coming up with some logos and club art for the website, literature and t-shirts.

There were a lot of dates and events thrown out, so here’s a recap:
Another great Long Island homebrew club, Long Island Beer and Malt Enthusiasts, will be having their next meeting on October 1 @ 7:30PM at Parlay Gastropub on Merrick Road in Rockville Center.

October 5 @ 1PM we are doing a Style Class on Porters at Homebrews and Handgrenades in Baldwin. We’ve got a couple of people signed up so far. I’ll be creating an event for this with the info. The cost will be simply the cost of whatever example beers we purchase divided by the participants.

October 9 @ 7:30PM is the next bottle share at Homebrews and Handgrenades.

Our next meeting will be on October 21 @ 7:30PM at The Black Sheep Ale House in Mineola. Paul Dlugokencky from Blind Bat Brewery will be our guest speaker.

November 1 is the American Homebrewer’s Association “How To Brew Day” at Homebrews and Handgrenades. If you haven’t brewed before, or have a friend that wants to learn about the process this is for you.

November 16 we will be doing our first brewery trip. The first bus is full, but we will be taking names for the waiting list to open up the second bus if there is enough demand or if people who have put down deposits have to back out. The itinerary will be a visit and brewery tour at Moustache Brewing Co. and visits to Long Ireland Beer Company and Crooked Ladder Brewing Company with lunch at Digger’s Ales & Eats next door.

Upcoming Beer Festivals:
October 25 is Punktoberfest at Great South Bay Brewery
October 31/November 1 is NYC Craft Beer Fest – Autumn Harvest.
November 8 is the International Great Beer Expo at Belmont Racetrack.

This is just the beginning! Much more to follow.
